RIP, Maurice Sendak
May 8th, 2012
“And he sailed off through night and day… to where the wild things are.”
~ Maurice Sendak, Where The Wild Things Are, 1963

I don’t usually cover obits, but it seems a shame to ignore the author and illustrator of one of my favourite books as a young child. Where The Wild Things Are is a story I remember dearly; as an adult, I marvel at the way Sendak is able to build a child’s world just as fantastical and imaginative as the wildest child could envision it, and a tale so simple and endearing it is loved the world over. Oddly, I hated the monsters of Sesame Street as a child, but I enjoyed Sendak’s savage creatures and his brave Max, who was a bit of a savage himself.
Rest in peace, king of the Wild Things.
“There are so many beautiful things in the world which I will have to leave when I die, but I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready.” ~ Maurice Sendak, 2011

Address is Approximate – a Toy’s tale of dreaming on Google Streetview
November 23rd, 2011
As the days get shorter, colder, you might be in the office on this Wednesday morning wishing you were somewhere else. But what if the office was your whole world? Director Tom Jenkins brings you a tale of how a “lonely office toy”, yearning for travel, gets to live his dream with the help of his office friends and Google Streetview in this beautifully moving stop motion short.
In case you’re wondering about the music, the piece is called Arrival of the Birds, from Cinematic Orchestra. It truly is cinematic, with intoxicating waves of sound that swell and ebb, sweeping you along for the ride.
Enjoy!

Happy Birthday, Material Girl!
August 17th, 2011
It’s Madonna’s birthday today! Does anyone else think that she’s hit a point at which she doesn’t seem to be aging? Okay, maybe it’s just me.
I never really listened to popular music until I got my own stereo in highschool – my parents are much more into classical music and musical numbers – but I could recognize the sound of Madonna anytime. Happy 53rd birthday, Madonna!

Happy Birthday, Louis Armstrong!
August 4th, 2011
One of my all-time favourite singers’ birthday is today, and I’ve been listening to his music all day. Happy Birthday, Louis Armstrong! I owe thanks to Armstrong (also known as Ol’ Satchmo) and his counterparts, including Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington, for getting me through the many all-nighters I pulled doing projects while I was in school. It’s impossible not to be in a good mood when you hear his voice.
Have a great day, everyone – and keep smiling!

A Handy Tip for the Easily Distracted
July 26th, 2011
Lately I’ve been feeling very scattered about – Google+ has been released, and although it’s supposed to be Google’s answer to/replacement for Facebook/Twitter/Linked-In, it feels like a different beast. So instead of spending the same amount of time on social networks (with Google+ taking over some of the time), I’ve been spending more time on all of them. TechCrunch put out an article yesterday on technological addiction, and I definitely feel as though I’ve become social-network-dependent. Oh no! Hi, I’m HeironyMuse, and I’m an internet-holic.
Along comes filmmaker Miranda July with a timely solution (that I, of course, found on the internet):

I can’t get enough of… Daphne Guinness
July 13th, 2011
This short film of the eccentric Guinness heir and fashion icon to many, shot by Brennan Stasiewicz, has been out for a month – but I’ve watched it a few times already. I adore fashion(able) short films, and Daphne’s Window is a permanent favourite.

Happy Birthday, you "Misleading Man"
May 11th, 2011
Watch Salvador Dali stump the players in what is quite possibly the most entertaining episode of the retro show “What’s My Line?“. Happy Birthday to the eccentric master of surrealism, Mr. Dali!
